The construction and regeneration of cities has in the centuries followed different models and strategies that are not always adequate to define today a widespread quality, that is understood as an expression of a healthy and livable environment. These models are founded and have given rise to a complex regulatory system, on national, regional and local levels, which although aimed to achieve determined living standards, often turn into projects that are not able of interpreting existing or future needs of health, sustainability and quality of our cities and in particular of their shared urban spaces. The welfare and wellbeing of contemporary city are in the centre of an articulated interdisciplinary debate whose vocabulary has progressively been enriched by words and concepts such as smart cities, participated process, quality of life, sustainability and health. These issues are often analyzed and observed from specialistic points of view that provide partial diagnoses related to the state of cities’ health, useful for defining comparisons and classifications, but not adequate to describe the quality of the spaces we live. There is a therapeutic potential of the city landscapes, which is possible to express through the same character of urban space and in the quality of architectural design of shared urban spaces. The health status of these places may be represented and analyzed in order to define good practices and possibly a set of "smart rules" able to accompany the urban project in all its phases and scales of development. In order to improve built environment quality, promoting healthy lifestyles, the urban design has the duty to reestablish an integral vision of cities with their landscapes, recomposing architectures, open spaces, mobility systems, productive spaces and green/blue infrastructures in a sustainable, balanced and alive environment.

Il capitolo è dedicato ai paesaggi delle acque in aree di foce e delta fluviali configurati dalla produzione agro-alimentare. Sono compresi due contributi che fanno riferimento alla ricerca: “Tra terra e acqua. Paesaggi configurati dalla produzione agroalimentare”. Il primo testo "Transizioni produttive" (di M. Vanore) presenta i temi progettuali a cui fa riferimento la ricerca svolta e diverse sperimentazioni progettuali ad essa correlate. Il secondo contributo "La macchina idraulica. Verso un progetto per il Delta del Po" (di S. Tornieri) affronta il caso del Delta Po in cui un complesso sistema di gestione delle acque definisce la straordinaria articolazione della infrastruttura idraulica e delle valli da pesca. Le questioni affrontate riguardano: valori patrimoniali dei sistemi di produzione, trasformazioni sostenibili dei territori costieri tanto in relazione alle tensioni ambientali quanto alle problematiche di accessibilità e fruizione.

The use of water in history produced many singular situations, determining quality and value of landscapes. In particular, the water made useful for productive processes built the soil of vast territories realizing specific infrastructures where features and potentials are progressively layered, defined by rules and restrictions of a crucial morphological structure.
The land reclamation landscape, configured by the process of drainage and irrigation, shows a composition of elements articulated as a production system, where the constituting form appears both resource and heritage for a sustainable development. Those lands are part of a landscape realized by a qualifying shape designed for the water control. Architectures and technical elements together with the network of canals, embankments and roads, that generated them, included some unusual stratification but they now need to assess their compatibility with future scenarios.
Places of land reclamation interpret minimum gradients outlined by canals, embankments, draining pumps, drainage basin described by rows of trees, different textures of fields, dotted with farmhouses, silos, factories or broken by villages and some urban centres, which often overload the artificial soil over its mechanical possibilities, sometimes producing critical situations.
That cultural legacy, that still has an active form in the transformation of landscape, will be investigated through the eyes of the architect that aims to highlight and systematize multiple values since they can be articulated in a singular integrated balance.
The re-reading of some Italian reclamation landscapes identified in Veneto and Lazio regions finds in the comparison between different geographical and cultural contexts, a relationship of the heritage values with the systemic-infrastructural ones among places, architectures and technical constructions, useful to outline strategies and practices for a sustainable transformation and enhancement of water landscapes.

In the last 70 years Matera has been highly influenced by the events of its historical centre, which has been extremely degraded in the Second Postwar, abandoned and closed in the 60’s, recognized World Heritage in 1993 and today a crucial part of the European Capital of Culture 2019. In particular, the design exploration of the workshop was mainly addressed to the qualification of a plural fruition of the Sassi’s ur- ban landscape and in a single project to the Matera presentation by transforming a faraway rail station. The accessibility and inclusiveness are influenced by the articulation of the routes to qualify the cultural experience of citizens and tourists, respecting that historical centre so much unique as fragile. In fact, the Sassi configuration expresses a border condition and an inseparable link with the Gravina landscape, perfectly integrated in a millenarian work that shaped the arduous soils to create spaces for living, whether they are hypogea, on surface, open or closed. Articulated between excavation, construction and water management, these same spaces establish a striking dialogue among gorges, rocks, architectures, monumental complexes, steep paths, visual references and terraces, always open to extraordinary panoramas.

Il volume raccoglie una serie di saggi incentrati sui valori patrimoniali di sistema, riconoscibili come risorsa attiva dei territori, da interpretare attraverso il progetto per una riqualificazione sostenibile del paesaggio.
In particolare sono presi in considerazione luoghi, architetture e infrastrutture determinati dall’ uso produttivo della risorsa acqua che identificano caratteri e potenzialità del paesaggio. Nel percorso dall’immaginario progettuale ai luoghi oggetto di ricerche e ai diversi casi studio, si propone un approccio che vada oltre gli aspetti esclusivamente tecnici, vincoli e norme generiche, per ricomporre diversi elementi e dimensioni culturali, costruendo nuove relazioni e rilevando l’utilità sociale di quanto oggi sia prefigurabile per assetti futuri. Il progetto di architettura e del paesaggio è inteso nelle sue diverse declinazioni come artefice essenziale di conoscenza, capace di creare riconoscibilità del valore specifico e di sistema, oltre a indicare dei criteri di attribuzione di valore, in rapporto ad una loro efficacia operativa, alla loro sostenibilità contemporanea in risposta agli esiti non sempre positivi di una patrimonializzazione diffusa.
